BVFF Outing July 2014

Date: July 19 – 20, 2014
Host: Nick Coe

Our July outing will take place @ Bear Valley Creek, just West of Stanley, Idaho. Bear Valley Creek comes together with Marsh Creek to form the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Bear Valley Creek is accessed by Forest Roads 579 and 582. You get there by turning off Highway 21 onto Road 579 just north of Banner Summit or by taking Forest Highway 22 east from Cascade. Forest Road 582 intersects Road 579 west of Bruce Meadows. The Bear Valley Creek trailhead is located near the Fir Creek camp-ground. The trail goes all the way to the Middle Fork, however it fords Bear Valley Creek five times. I will be floating the upper section of the river in a one man pontoon on one day, and then hiking down stream another day into the canyon section. Anglers can catch Cutthroat, Bull Trout, Brook Trout, and Whitefish in these waters, and it’s not uncommon to see Chinook Salmon or Steelhead moving upstream for their annual migrations from the ocean!

We have decided to camp right on Bear Valley Creek, near the first bridge on the meadow. See map below
