Hi Everyone,
We are pleased to welcome you back to Fly Tying Friday. For this week and next week, the subject is "furling." It's a process we'll use on both flies AND leaders. On Friday, October 8, we'll focus on tying a simple, furled stonefly dry-fly pattern with a grizzly brown mixed hackle. THEN we'll share with all of you the standard tapered leader (STL) we use. You'll learn the only tool(s) needed to construct this leader is your fingers. Yes, that's it, just your fingers! You'll also learn there is more to mixing brown and grizzly hackle than just wrapping the two feathers on a hook. In future sessions, we have a group of great fly tiers to help us through the more than 30 evenings but… Whether we conduct the Zoom program ourselves or we have help, we plan to end each session with a 5-minute tip or trick just to round out the experience. Fly Materials Needed:
Furled Stonefly (dry)
Hackled Stonefly Adult
- Hook: Dry fly, size #8 - #16
- Thread: Orange (color of choice)
- Body: Poly yarn, furled (color of choice)
- Wing: Fox squirrel tail (OR calf, elk, deer, moose, etc.)
- Hackle: Grizzly-brown mixed
Leader Supplies Needed:
We'll be using 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, or 15-lb test Maxima Ultragreen soft monofilament but any mono will work just fine. This style leader only uses 2 different strength pieces of mono; the two produce a heavier or lighter product based on your wants-needs.
