BT’s Go-To Hopper

On this week’s Fly Tying Friday we’ll feather two hopper patterns. They are a Molly Hopper and a modified Henry’s Fork Hopper. What’s interesting, we only need one recipe for both flies and it’s listed below. The WEEKLY TIP will feature working with knotted rubber legs. Have you noticed those knotted-round legs often seem to have a mind of their own? Sometimes they just refuse to sit on the fly’s body the way you want! We have the solution. Tune in on Friday, 28 January 2022 at 6:00 PM MT to learn the answer.

Go-To Hoppers

  • Hook: Dry, 2XL- 4XL, size 12 – 6
  • Thread: Yellow (size & color of choice)
  • Head: Poly Yarn (bullet style) or elk-deer (half-head style)
  • Wing: Brown 2-mm foam or “prepared” pheasant feather
  • Legs: Rubber leg material (straight, knotted, or curved)
  • Head/collar: Thread

Materials Needed:

  • Elk or deer body hair
  • hooks
  • thread (6/0 or 3/0, yellow, choice)
  • yellow 2-mm foam (both patterns)
  • Poly Yarn (for the Molly Hopper)
  • rubber leg material (color of choice) for both patterns. The two are so similar we only need one recipe for both.
